Union - Sassy Green Buzz!

"If 10,000 Seattle Biters opt to explore Hood Canal in a kayak instead of a motorboat, we'll save enough fuel in an hour to fill 1,239 kiddie pools."
Robin Hood (Canal)

"Long flights robbing all your vacay time? Pricey too - so try stealing away to the nearby Alderbrook Resort at Hood Canal. Rent you-powered canoes, kayaks, and (alas, our fave) paddle boats from the resort's marina to cruise the waters. Or gather and shuck your own oysters (or get some at the Robin Hood restaurant), and then head to the spa for a refreshing paraben-free Priori CoffeeBerry Skin Revitalizing Facial. Wash up in your posh room (complete with soaking tub) - cleaned with Green Seal-certified products. How merry."

Great Movie for the benefit of the Theler Center

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to invite all of you to a Movie Benefit for the Theler Center on Sunday, April 26th at the Bay Street Theater in Port Orchard. There will be 2 showings one at 4 p.m. the other at 7 p.m. It's a terrific documentary that 2 dear friends of mine directed and produced called... Flow; For the Love of Water. It has won all sorts of awards across the globe and Robert Redford calls it one of the most important pieces of work ever done on the state of global water and the rights of all citizens to call water a human right. There will be a discussion between showings. This is a great way to enjoy a Sunday movie and help out a great cause in our sister town. The Theler Center supported my parents while they were alive with many wonderful activities for seniors and it is also a valuable community resource for all of us. When we had the mud slides, the Theler Center was there to host FEMA for days and days! If you need more info. please Email me and I will be happy to answer any questions you might have.

From Lindsey Johnson at Washington Film Works

Below are 2 E-mails from Lindsey Johnson at Washington Film Works. She has sent these to me in regards to helping us bring film makers to Union and the surrounding area. In the first E-mail there is a list of items that would be helpful for her to have. I will be compiling these for a book to send to her on Union. The 2nd is the latest request from a production company looking to film for 3 months in one area.  Any suggestions or ideas on this would be great! Let me know.
Linda Helms/Pebble Beach Place

Hi Linda,

Thank you for your email!  I would love to have information from you for our
online resource database.

It would be great if you could send me:
Location photos - downtown, views, homes, anything unique or interesting.
Information that is unique - such as the info about the fjord.
Info about the lodging, dining, entertainment.
Any vacant buildings/warehouses you have that can be used for building sets.
If you know any homeowners/businesses that are open to having filming on
their property.

I will then add it to our online database!  If you are interested I would
also like to add you to our film liaison list to keep you posted on what we
are up to, and ask location questions.  Also we would like to be on any
newsletter lists you have or you can send us updates on activities in your
area.

Please let me know if this is possible, and what questions you have.

Best,
Lindsey

Hello,

We are looking for a location for a TV show.  Please see below for what they are looking for and let me know by end of day Thursday if you have any suggestions from your area.

The idea is to find somewhere that could believably be inhabited today but has been deserted – a small town/village/area that people have suddenly disappeared from.

They are looking for:
  • An area that has a mix of empty homes and stores (or what were homes and stores).
  • A neighborhood, rather than a row of buildings or one street.
  • It would need to be completely empty for the whole 3 month filming period.
  • The style of the buildings isn’t hugely important – as long as they don't look like they are from a totally different era.

Please let me know if you have any ideas, or questions.  If you have pictures you can send that would be great!

Best,
Lindsey

Your Local Union

There are some beautiful pictures of Union that local realtors have been posting on the Localism - Union blog.

WEBSITE: http://localism.com/wa/union

This blog is actually not just for realtors, but any local business - "Localism is the valued point of connection, a place of meaningful interaction. It's where neighbors and local merchants share what's happening in their community. It's people collectively communicating the unique flavor and nuances of where they live, work, eat, and play."

"Localism provides the environment where residents and business owners can create a micro-social network uniquely attuned to their individual communities. Together, they use multi-media to paint a canvas of local color and texture. Their Localism 'Neighborpedia' becomes an extension of who and what they are."

It would be great for Union Tourism Association members to contribute photos and content to this already active online local Union community, especially since links to this blog appear when folks search for Union, however we're currently not allowed in by the realtor company that runs the site ActiveRain.

If any realtors that are part of the Union Tourism Association can contact ActiveRain to allow us access to our town's blog that would be appreciated.

Union Marketing Committee Meeting Notes

Meeting - April 14th (2pm-4pm)

Union Map

Design of the map was reviewed and it was decided to focus the map just on the main strip of 106 from the Marina to Saint Andrews and parts of Dalby Road in order to include a larger close-up of the area. Numbers on the map will locate specific landmarks and businesses in those area as well as landmarks such as Dalby Waterwheel.

The back of the map will include a Business Directory that groups businesses by categories (lodging, etc.). A business will be able to include their name, phone number, and website. The five categories that businesses can be listed under will be Dining, Lodging, Recreation, Shopping and Services. There will also be premium spots along the side of the map that allow space for larger ads (that match the style and look of the map).

The map will include an insert of calendar of events that will include a premium space on the back of the card that will allow more space for sale including a solo ad.

James Bell will research print quotes before the next meeting.

Branding of Union

There was some discussion regarding the branding of Union. Most people agreed that a "green way of living" might be the direction we would like to go. A number of reasons were brought up, from the money savings for businesses in reduced energy costs to being able to protect Union's image in the wake of any sort bad publicity elsewhere in the county. The discussion was put on hold until the next marketing meeting or the completion of the map and calendar of events.

Visitor Information Signs

A short term solution for visitor information signs was put into place and signs should be produced and ready for distribution at the next meeting.

Bridge Closure

General consensus is that there isn't enough time and too many unknowns for the group to work around the bridge closures. Marketing will have signs up and distributed to businesses and have the map available for people to have at their businesses by the time the bridge is closed. We would like businesses to collect customer business cards or contact info and will brainstorm an incentive for next meeting (win free night stay, etc.)

Mason County Amendment to Temporary Outdoor Public Event Public Hearing

Via our friend Frank Benaventa at the Port of Hoodsport (from Ken Wilson with the Port of Allyn):

As you may have heard (although we were advised that the Amendment to the Special Events would be carried over to the April 28th meeting without comment) the commissioners decided to have staff make their presentation and ask for comments on the 14th. Luckily, we were present. The Chamber stated their recommendation; the Port of Allyn submitted their letter of concern, as did I for the group as a whole. To recap, the County stated the intent was not to close down existing events, only to amend a code sorely outdated. Our position was stated as needing "stakeholder" representation prior to submission of any documentation. The outcome was a "continuation" to April 28th and an agreement with the commissioners to meet with county staff to discuss items of concern. To that end Barb Adkins has agreed to meet with us at the Port of Allyn on April 21st (Tues) @ 3 PM. Our challenge is that we are working with a document that is older than many who will be attending the meeting. Any data is from the same era. To compound that the commissioners would like a finished doucument prior to the event season (May). So we have our hands full, but if we can think out of the box on this one, there may be some wiggle room. One commissioner stated he wasn't against categorizing events, or something that would avoid the one size fits all concept. So lets meet and see if we can't come up with a working document we can all live with for current and future events in the county. Please only send one representative per festival, event, organization, or association. We only have an hour and a half with Barbara this time around. Call if you have any questions. Thanks,Ken * Frank can you invite any Festivals off the sign-off sheet that I have left off the mailing, including Oysterfest.

Is anyone able to attend? - Jolene.

FIRST DRAFT Visitor Map

All,

I've completed the first draft of a Visitor's Map for review (and yes, I know The Bend's address is incorrect - it's just a placeholder).

A couple of issues to be aware of:

1) Union is an odd shape making it difficult to fit onto a printer-friendly letter-sized sheet all the way to Twanoh, and have some detail of the actual town area. I've balanced things as best as I can to give us enough detail to give directions well AND show most business locations.

2) Not all of us can be on the map without it becoming too cluttered and confusing to use. Therefore I've focused on what I'm thinking of as "foundation" business locations that will serve all of us as major location landmarks, while at the same time trying to design a format that will allow each of us individually to customize things with a small sticker or somesuch if we like.

3) I'm still working on a design for the reverse side that will work both as trifold panels AND a logo-based business directory per our previous discussion.

I'll bring hard copies to tomorrow's marketing meeting. Click the image to see/print full sized.

Origins of Lifestyle and the Connection to Tourism and Sustainability

"A tree's style of life is the individuality of the tree expressing itself and moulding itself to an environment. We recognise a style when we see it... for we then realise that every tree has a life pattern and is not merely a mechanical reaction to the environment. It is much the same way with human beings."
       - Alfred Adler

The word "lifestyle" is from 1929, originally a specific term used by Austrian psychologist Alfred Adler (1870-1937). He defined lifestyle by analogy to how a tree expresses itself.

It would be an interesting group exercise to have each Union business choose the tree that best identified their lifestyle based on that tree's function in our ecosystem.

The term lifestyle took on new meaning during the sixties. "In Adler's theory the 'style of life' refers to how we live, sort out difficulties, and manage our own personal relationships. He strongly believed that each one of us is a distinctive, unique individual with our own characteristic way of life."

These days it is more often used to express "a way of life or style of living that reflects the attitudes and values of a person or group." As a result "for tourism, this influences the tourists' perception of his/her behaviour."

the connection of lifestyle, tourism
- (2008) Scientific Journal on
Agricultural Economics
http://ideas.repec.org/a/ags/gazdal/48092.html

"In this short essay attention will be focused on the mutual effects of lifestyle and tourism. After taking a brief look at different life-stages, which, according to Knowles (2001), have a fundamental influence on holiday choice, we will examine other factors that determine tourists' decisions. The most important of these factors (perhaps not surprisingly) are time and money."

This research paper has some interesting data presented in a summary fashion for quick perusal. It contains information such as the socio-cultural impacts on host societies of tourism. Such impacts include: "... demand for female labour, increase in seasonality of employment, revitalization of cultural traditions, breakdown of moral values (for example prostitution, crime, gambling)..." A number of other interesting facts are presented, like "as for traveling, 70% of all tourism journeys are connected to the car."

A tourism campaign suggested in the paper is: "Say No to Bad Souvenirs - some souvenirs could end up costing a lot more than you paid for them." Since Union as of yet has very few "souvenirs" for sale (besides memories) we could encourage high quality locally produced souvenirs and actively discourage such "bad souvenirs".

In the retail world there is a phenomena whereby when a "non-toxic" product is placed among existing products people see the existing brands as toxic by default. In the same way Union could encourage and market sustainability in souvenir making and selling, thereby driving up demand for its souvenirs while obsolescing competition. Local or regionally made art, organic and locally grown items, etc. generally fits into this category. A number of Big Box stores will not stock such items as non-toxic furniture because it so negatively impacts the neighboring brands.
